A Pre Brew Notation

It has been a bit since the last brew so this will be all messed up probably but here is the plan.

Use up the stuff I have laying around. I have a smattering of different things, but luckily because I usually brew Brit styles, everything I do have on hand fits together.

The thing is, beer math has now for the most part, left my brain. And I will need to think this through ahead of time. I am not on autopilot any more. Especially with this mixing of grains and DME.

I have had a recipe already made up in beersmith for about a year now,, but how I get there is gonna be the trick. So lets see what we got and see if I can remember what to do.

Total Confusion Strong Ale – Brit strong 6%

  • 6lbs Maris Otter
  • 8oz Caramel 60
  • 3lbs light DME
  • 2oz Black Pat
  • 8oz Carapils
  • 1oz Perle 60
  • 1oz EKG 15
  • 1oz EKG 0
  • Notty yeast.

Ok that actually looks pretty damn good.

The first thing I need to do now is figure out the water amounts. What I need to do here is split my water and mash kinda thicker, and use the extra water needed to sparge or top up to mix the DME

So my total water volume is 7 gallons needed.

But my Mash water volume is gonna be just 5 gallons.

The DME Mix volume is gonna be 2 gallons

I checked with the brewday timer in Beersmith and they are saying to use a bit more water. And I remember that it was always off slightly and that I found out why, but now I can’t remember if I fixed that or not. But I do see that I didn’t account for the DME to absorb so I will in fact use slightly more. I’ll say 7.25 total and use the .25 in the mash

The rest of the brew day should be just as normal as any other.

  1. Heat 5.25 gallons water to 160
  2. Mash in the grains and settle at 152F and mash for 60
  3. Pull mash and recirc as normal, proceed to boil temp
  4. When heating to boil, mix up the DME with the other two gallons of cold water and add to the kettle. We should be at 6.6 gallon PreBoil and roughly 1055
  5. Hops added at the 60, 15 and flame out.
  6. Chill and whirlpool. Should be around 1060
  7. Transfer and pitch.

That sounds easy enough. Maybe I can pull this off
